The Heritage of Hannah Neil

Just shy of 36,000 square feet, The Heritage of Hannah Neil is our biggest project yet. Having sat vacant for years, the building, with its sprawling wings and landscape would be one of Ohio’s most versatile behavioral health centers located on one campus. The biggest challenge we faced was to stay true to our mission and provide a safe and healing environment throughout.

Starting with the outpatient entrance, clients and staff are greeted by large paintings of dogs, because, who else greets you without judgment and is always happy to see you? Each therapy room is a different theme, allowing a comfort level for all ages. The educational wing houses a school, summer camp, art room, gymnasium and music room.

Down the hall, past the large dinosaur footprints and tetradactyl signs (graciously donated to us by The Columbus Zoo), the residential doors open to a zoo themed central “yurt” rumpus room. Surrounding our yurt room, you will find more therapy rooms, a phone room, and the 4 residential wings. The wings are home to up to 40 children at a time. There is the cottage room decorated in everything girlie, the nautical room anchored by a vintage sailboat coffee table, the flight room where a 1970’s Cessna tail hangs suspended from the ceiling and a sports room with a working scoreboard and marquee letters from Madison Square Gardens. The cafeteria boasts old-time ice cream stools and a 1950’s Thunderbird jukebox where the children can swing and eat all at once!

Throughout, we added hand made art and furnishings. The children probably have never heard of Madison Square Gardens or even been on a boat. Here, they get to dream and heal and even though there is a lot put into the environment that they will never understand, there is a heart behind every selection that gives them a hug.
